I’ve heard a lot about Mayday and I know how they’re always referred to as a superband but I don’t follow the Chinese music scene much so I have no idea what the fuss was about to be honest. Haha.
So I headed down to the Padang within the Marina Bay Circuit last night specifically to watch Mayday live in concert for the first time with high expectations but my friend warned me to lower them as Ashin (the lead singer) sucks live. LOL.

True enough, Ashin’s vocals were really terrible. LOL. I thought Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance was bad but this is way worse! There was not much vocal power (for a rocker), he was off pitch, off-key and all that. I don’t even know what to say. It’s practically mystifying how Mayday could pack up the entire Padang with such a crappy lead singer. It was packed even more tightly than Jay Chou and Justin Bieber!

All that said, I stayed for the entire concert and left just before the encore to beat the crowd at the MRT and I can understand the success of Mayday. Despite the crappy vocals, the band’s sound is super tight and solid. Their songs were really good and the lyrics were really powerful and/or beautiful. It really is such a huge shame that the vocals were so lacking.
Also, I’m sure that Singapore Airlines with Formula 1 spent a lot of money on the stage as it was overflowing with awesome. The sound, video and lighting was amazing. Never say no to a concert within the F1.
A small sidetrack from the Mayday concert, there were a lot of additional screens for the Zone 4 Walkabout pass holders to catch the race and that was just great because you cannot appreciate F1 by just watching the cars zoom by, it’s meaningless. You need to know the driver race positions and time gaps between the cars for everything to make sense and feel the excitement!
Anyway, I didn’t keep track of the setlist of the concert even though they flashed the song title and lyrics on the screen for you to sing-along. Hahaha. It was like a major karaoke session. Out of all the songs they performed, I only knew <恋爱 ing> so… lol.
So here are some of the photos from the Mayday concert that I took last night:
And now on to Day 2 of the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix!
Hi..if you think you can stand on the padang stage then u put this kind of blog..
Well, though I agree with you that his vocals are not very good, in fact I feel its quite taxing “吃力” nowadays… I feel he sings with emotions. something tt not many singers can do now. Given that mayday’s lyrics are emotive and descriptive (with a sort of “teleportation” ability (to me at least)), I think they make up for his lack of singing ability… Not to mention,a mayday concert is always “ONE big karaoke session” between fans and band… In my opinion, ashin ability to engage the crowd is a pull factor for their concerts… the chemistry between the guy and the floor is what draws us fans time and time again to attend their concerts…
