2013 MTV Europe Music Awards Post Mortem

This year’s MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) is definitely memorable in a few ways.

Firstly, MTV Asia did the screening of the MTV EMA in Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral in Kuala Lumpur (duh), Malaysia and I cannot thank the awesome people at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral/Starwood Group for their hospitality and MTV Asia for making it happen.

Secondly, EMINEM performed “Berserk!” and “Rap God” at the show. To me, it’s like who cares about everyone else when Eminem is there to perform? It’s freaking Eminem!! (Yes, I’m a huge fan of Eminem in case you cannot tell.)

Honestly, being in Asia, as a result of time zones, the MTVEMA screening is usually a more chilled affair as everyone would have already scrolled through their twitter timeline before the screening started and everyone already know who the winners are and what’s the highlight/controversy of the show. Still, it was fun to watch the show with a bunch of people who know their MTV and then gossip and bitch about it. Hehehe.

When Miley Cyrus opened the show with “We Can’t Stop”, I was kinda like “meh”. it always feels like Miley is trying too hard to be a bad girl and get all down and dirty. I know she wants to be controversial and all but it just feels like she’s trying too hard and it was kinda painful to watch her nowadays. To me at least.

However, when Redfoo took to the stage and stripped down to his/LMFAO “trademark” speedos, you know things will just get wackier and wackier.

I must say that I actually enjoyed watching Redfoo hosting the MTVEMA. He is funny and such a chill dude. And I really admire his confidence in his body image. I bow. Orz

Another highlight of the show for me was how Jared Leto asked for everyone’s attention a minute for everyone to pray (I think) for the people in the Philippines who are affected by the super massive typhoon. It was cut out of broadcast in some countries I heard. I don’t know. Still, how cool is Jared to do that?

OH! And how could I forget? The really epic battle for the coveted “Best Worldwide Act” award!! When Chris Lee was announced to be the winner, I must say that the producer was really smart to focus the cameras on Kris and Suho of EXO. The whole situation was really entertaining.

On on hand you have people clearly cheering for Chris Lee out of courtesy but it’s clear that everyone was like, “Who!?!?” Then the camera quickly zooms into Kris and Suho who looked kinda disappointed. Still, from the overall expression and vibe, you can see that both of them were kinda disappointed that EXO didn’t get the award.

And needless to say, my whole twitter timeline was flooded with all the fan reactions of EXO not winning the “Best Worldwide Act” award. It was hysterical. ^^

Get this straight people: it’s almost always a number games. China has 1.3 ~ 1.4 billion people and assuming that only 0.1% are interested in the MTVEMA, we’re talking about 1 million people yo. If everyone of them voted 10 times, they casted 10 million votes. No way for any non-Chinese artist to win really.

Anyway, enough of me rambling, here’s the full list of winners at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards:
